Student athletes from Central Islip High School, along with Mr. Lawrence S. Philips, Director of Athletics, continue their annual tradition of traveling to elementary schools to promote literacy and good scholastic habits. This year student athletes traveled to Morrow Elementary where they read developmentally-appropriate books to their young counterparts. The Student Athletes As Reading Partners promotes academics and allows student athletes to give back to their home community. In Central Islip School District, interscholastic athletics is an extension of the classroom. After reading the new books (Mr. Philips extended thanks to Ms. Philips and I AM CI Foundation), student athletes fielded questions, posed for pictures, and signed autographs for students and books for each teacher's class library. High school students emphasized the importance to the elementary students of doing their best in school. They also shared that it is a special privilege to be varsity student athletes. Mr. Philips extended special thanks to Morrow Elementary Principal Dr. Coker, Morrow Teaching Assistant Mrs. Philips. He acknowledged the Morrow staff who helped put the program together and helped reiterate the importance of physical education and physical activity. The CDC states " . . . physical activity can have an impact on cognitive skills and academic behavior, all of which are important components of improved academic performance."  Student athletes were greeted by members of the Morrow Elementary Band who welcomed them to their school.
