Dr Howard Koenig

To the Central Islip School Community,

On behalf of the Central Islip Board of Education and Administration, I would like to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year. I hope you enjoyed a wonderful summer!

The new school year promises to be an exciting one for our students at all grade levels. Over the past school year and throughout the summer, we were busy implementing the District Restructuring to address overcrowding, a lack of space and enrollment projections for future years.

As a result, our School District has been restructured as follows: Central Islip High School (Grades 9 – 12); Reed Middle School (Grades 7 and 8); and our six elementary schools: Cordello, Morrow, Mulligan, Mulvey, O’Neill and Alfano Elementary Schools (Grades K – 6). The in-district pre-kindergarten program will remain in the Alfano Elementary School.  Our distinguished team of administrators, faculty and staff are committed to fostering student success in an enriching and safe educational environment.

As your Superintendent of Schools, I thank you for entrusting your children to us and supporting our efforts to provide them with a positive, enriching educational experience.  Our community supported the 2018-2019 Budget which continues the integrity of our School District’s academic, athletic and artistic programs for all students to achieve their personal best.

On September 27, 2018, the Community voted to decide whether to construct a fence around the perimeter of Central Islip High School. The majority of the voting electorate approved this referendum. As a result, a six-foot fence with black wrought-iron colored steel sectioned with brick piers will be constructed around the perimeter of the high school. From a security standpoint, the fence will enhance our ability to control entrance and exit points onto and off of the High School campus. You will be receiving details as this project progresses. Thank you for taking time to come out to vote.

Over the summer Governor Andrew Cuomo, together with Islip Town officials, came to Central Islip to announce that our community is the recipient of a ten million dollar Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant. The program is designed to enhance our downtown business community and bolster the local economy. We will keep you apprised as facets of this grant are implemented.

As the new school year unfolds, there are opportunities for you to attend Board of Education Meetings, numerous scholastic and athletic events, concerts and an array of school-related activities that showcase the talents and progress of our students. I welcome you to attend these activities and I encourage you to become involved in your children’s school activities. Welcome back and enjoy a wonderful year.

Sincerely,

Howard M. Koenig, Ph.D.
