Yu 'Kevin' Zhu Named Semi Finalist in Prestigious Regeneron Science Competition

This is the image for the news article titled  Yu 'Kevin' Zhu Named Semi Finalist in Prestigious Regeneron Science CompetitionCongratulations to Central Islip High School Senior, Yu 'Kevin' Zhu who has just been named a semi finalist in the prestigious Regeneron STS (Science Talent Search) 2020 Competition and his Science Research Teacher, Mrs. Roann Roderick. Mr. Zhu was selected as a semi finalist from a field of 1,993 student high school applicants from around the world. This is the first time a student from Central Islip High School has submitted a project in this science competition. Scholars were chosen for their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists. His project analyses the effects of simulated microgravity on the biofilm production and susceptibility of Acinetobacter TAT (Tween Arginine Translocase) mutants. Mr. Zhu and the Central Islip High School have each been awarded $2,000 for this distinction. Regeneron STS started in 1942 as the Westinghouse Talent Search. Regeneron STS affords students  the opportunity to present their original research projects on a global level. Mr. Zhu said he is "grateful and very happy" to have achieved this recognition. A very proud Mrs. Roderick stated: "Over the years, I have watched Kevin grow and become a legitimate science researcher, and this is something you cannot put a price on. I am so thrilled for him." Mr. Zhu's project now qualifies for the Regeneron STS Finals where finalists are scheduled to be announced later this month. The Board of Education, Administration, Faculty and Staff of the Central Islip School District extend warmest congratulations to Yu 'Kevin' Zhu and Mrs. Roderick.
