Superintendent's Page

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we prepare to welcome in 2021, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a wonderful holiday and a very happy and healthy New Year!

In reflecting upon the year past, we can all attest that 2020 has been an unprecedented time filled with numerous challenges and hurdles caused by the pandemic. I am so proud to say that we, both as a school district and a community, have worked as a team to overcome those challenges and scale the hurdles to provide the best education for our children in the safest learning environment possible. I want to thank you for your cooperation as we continue to move forward working together. We can call Central Islip a School District we can all be proud of through our collaborative partnership.

So as we embark upon winter recess, please take this time to appreciate your friends and families. Enjoy a happy holiday and a New Year filled with peace and happiness. On behalf of the Board of Education, Administration, Faculty, and Staff, we look forward to seeing you in 2021 as we all stay safe and CI Strong!

Sincerely,

Mr. Norman  A. Wagner
President of the Board of Education

Ms. Sharon A. Dungee
Superintendent of Schools

Dear Central Islip Families,

Since returning to instruction for the 2020 School Year, we have had 59 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our schools. These cases have included students, faculty, staff and administrators. Our strategy to convert to all-virtual instruction during the week following Thanksgiving seems to have helped our mitigation efforts in keeping COVID cases out of our schools and preventing further disruption of instruction and school district operations.

I, together with the Board of Education, Administration, Faculty and Staff are extremely concerned about a potential spike in COVID-19 cases that will follow this holiday season. I am therefore sending you this letter to advise you that effective Monday, January 4th through Friday, January 8th, (the week following Winter Recess), Central Islip Schools will again transition from in-person/hybrid instruction to all-virtual distance learning. The switch to all-virtual distance instruction during this period is not a permanent change. During this five-day period of distance learning, students should follow their regular daily class schedules as if they were attending school.

The decision to institute the distance learning platform during the week following Winter Recess is again intended to keep COVID-19 cases from infiltrating our schools. This decision does not change our ultimate goal to provide the best education in the safest environment possible, nor does it by any measure, change our commitment to being in school full time with our students.

As your Superintendent of Schools, I am aware of the burden this decision may place on some of our families, particularly those with young children where adults work outside the home. I am sharing this decision with you now so you will have time to arrange for necessary childcare scheduling should that be necessary. Please check our website as the YES program can provide childcare options for students in grades K-6.

As we approach another hurdle in the challenge to prevent COVID-19 from entering our schools, please know that our District is taking all precautions and practicing protocols to maintain a safe school environment for our students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The confirmed 58 COVID cases in our schools indicates that the virus is ever present, and poses a major health threat to our schools, our homes, and our community. Please limit group gatherings to small numbers as recommended by Health experts, and continue to maintain social distancing, wear masks, and wash hands frequently.

As we continue to work together to stay protected from Coronavirus, we are getting news that a vaccine may soon be available. Until we have more definitive information on exactly when the vaccine will be distributed, however, it is important that we remain vigilant in our efforts to protect our own health, and the health and safety of others.

On behalf of the Board of Education, Administration, Faculty, and Staff, I want to thank you for your patience and partnership as we work to overcome these challenges. You are certainly doing your part, and we appreciate all of the efforts that you are taking to work with your children's schools. Please stay safe, and enjoy a happy and healthy holiday.

Sincerely,

Ms. Sharon A. Dungee
