Dear Central Islip Schools Community:
Recently parents of students have received disturbing and dangerous telephone calls from strangers. The telephone calls are similar in that the caller states the parent's child has been in an accident, or they may state they have custody of the child. After the initial statement the caller typically asks the parent to immediately bring money to a location, possibly a store parking lot.
These telephone calls are generally occurring during the school day which I have the following advice: As soon as the call ends, call the police immediately. After you contact the police, phone or go to your child's school to confirm their attendance.
I am aware of this happening to one of our families as well as families in other school districts. In all cases the parents handled the situation appropriately and notified the authorities. I am concerned the people behind these horrific tactics will continue to try to victimize unsuspecting parents which is why we are sending out this notification.
Please share this with family and friends and continue to speak to your children about never getting into a stranger's car on the way to and from school.
Sincerely,
Thomas Weiner
Director of School Safety
Central Islip School District
