Students enrolled in the Title III Newcomer Enrichment Summer Program are engaging in a wide array of activities in small group settings. Each day throughout the month of July, 96 youngsters, enthusiastic to learn, participate in the program as they engage in a series of academics, art and music lessons that follow a common theme within their academic instruction. Students are also completing some of their lessons utilizing laptop technology provided by the School District which is enabling them to become familiar with software when classes being in September. Bilingual, ENL & World Learners Administrator, Dr. Mariana Gil, noted the summer program's main objectives are to provide both newly-arrived and already-enrolled students with opportunities of extra support and preparation for when schools open in September. "The benefits of this program to the students are vast," Dr. Gil explained. "The program offers opportunities for students to build a social benefits network, it provides literacy support, and the activities prepare students for the new school year." Funding for the Title III Newcomer Enrichment Program is provided by a federal grant which is administered by the state. School Board President Norman A. Wagner and Superintendent of Schools Sharon A. Dungee toured the Title III Newcomer Enrichment Program and praised its initiatives for the numerous academic gains and socialization skills from which students are benefiting as they prepare for the 2021-2022 School Year.
